Programs > Family University First 5

Sponsored by a grant from Alameda County First Five, Family University First 5 is run with the aim to support the healthy social, developmental, cognitive, and academic potential of children aged 0-5. The workshops cover the most essential topics that pertain to this age group including development, discipline, social skills, building positive self-esteem, sharing, getting ready for kindergarten, and supporting early literacy.

Workshops are currently held at the Highland and Melrose Early Childhood Development Centers in Oakland once a month for five months, on the second Wednesday of each month. Workshops will run through March 2013.

“With the program I get to work together more and more with my child, activities that I never thought would work, but when we tried the best things happened. This program pushed me more to help my child's education. I love this program.”

Coaching

As a participant in this workshop, you will be offered the opportunity to speak with a personal coach every month by phone or in person about your concerns regarding your child's development and behavior. Marcus Foster Education Fund coaches are specialists in the field of early child development, including social, emotional, and cognitive health. Participation in coaching is an option; you will not be required to sign up with a coach, though we recommend it as it offers a chance to deepen your understanding of your child's learning.
