Help Us Eliminate the Digital Divide in Oakland
Volunteers are essential in our mission to get Oakland connected. We welcome all Oakland resident to join us in preparing computer equipment for distribution to schools, community centers and homesthroughout the city. Typical volunteer activities include cleaning computer equipment, dismantling scrap computers, sorting and wrapping cables, among others. You do not need any technical ability or special skills to volunteer, but you must be at least 11 years of age. Please note that we do not have the capacity to provide childcare, so please make arrangements if you have little ones.
Volunteers will receive 1 "service buck" for every hour they work, which can be used to purchase items from our tech store. Located in the OTX-West warehouse, you can use your service bucks to purchase a set of speakers, printers (ink and paper not included), wireless routers, wireless network cards, scanners, microphones, and other items. Prices range from 1 service buck, for a black mouse, to 8 service bucks for a color, all-in-one printer (when available). You can also volunteer to upgrade
your computer to a faster model with Windows 7, CD burner, DVD drive and more.
Adult volunteers can volunteer 20 or more hours to receive a computer, and additional hours to get other items mentioned above.
No appointment is necessary to volunteer.
